At Redrock Ranch, July or August, 1957…………mid afternoon:
(See bottom for an explanation of this drawing.)
Working with horses was one of my deepest desires as a young teenager. It remained so this mid afternoon at the Red Rock Ranch, which was (and possibly still is) located just a mile and a half or so east of Dubois, Wyoming. Little could I remember the periodic UFO encounters I had already experienced with other human beings–and horses–this mysterious eventful summer.
It, the ranch, consisted of a couple of rows of well constructed (motel type) tailored log cabins that were supported by an owners residence, a cook house, corrals, pastures, hay fields, a stable and a small bunk house (in which I slept)…not to mention a truck, a tractor, a car, a jeep and various pieces of old rusty farm equipment. And most important of course we had horses of various breeds, colors and shapes. It was a wonderful setting, just several yards north of highway 285. The ranch nestled timelessly a few yards south of the rushing Wind River…which large and small granite boulders had naturally infested causing the water to roar continuously day and night, week upon week, year upon year, into endless timeless eternity. A badlands, similar to the South Dakota Badlands, embraced the river and ranch on the north and the majestic Wind River Mountain Range encapsulated the picturesque valley a few miles toward the south.
I had hired on at the ranch as a horse and dude wrangler, breaker and trainer. My friend, Freddy, swore he would train me to become all three (wrangler, breaker and trainer) of both the horses and the “dude” human beings…most of whom came vacationing from the big cities of the Eastern USA. Yet, we from time to time entertained folks with foreign accents, most of them from the European countries.
On this particular mid afternoon there were four of us, male human beings, riding four horses of mixed sexes. One horse in particular was a mare who recently, periodically, had been having trouble staying upright with or without a rider on her back. She had recently bore twins as beautiful as she, but one colt had died when it accidentally wondered into a bog “sink hole” along the tree studded shore of the wild Wind River. Never-the-less, regardless of her spells of shying, you could tell the mare intensely loved her remaining living colt who, as time passed, did turned out to be as beautiful as she.
We had just ridden our four horses in the pasture south of the highway. We were slowing moving across the highway toward the north ditch, when suddenly the mare lowered her head, spread her legs and squatted. Straining to move her head forward toward the ditch, it seemed as if she were seeing something very frightening. She bucked a little and tried to back up, her knees buckling from a bizarre object we humans now saw in the ditch. Freddie who was riding her kept her upright with a tight rein. This alarming movement of the mare seemed to last for quite some time, but I’m quite sure it was no longer than a minute or a few minutes.
I did notice the air in front of her in the ditch had hissed and sputtered, becoming unstable as I looked at it. It was as if I were looking at a fluctuating magnifying screen. Then just for a moment or two I saw a metallic disc-shaped object materialize in the ditch, within the volume of distorted air. It happened at least two times.
This was the reason we had saddled up to take our ride. The mare had shied like this before, nearly dumping her riders to the ground, especially once when I had two distinguished riders out on the other side of the Wind River.
As I recall, it was a doctor and his wife. We were approaching a cliff, when the same type of unbelievable manifestation occurred. A volume of hissing air developed in front of us and the mare squatted and shied sideways, nearly throwing the doctor’s wife to the ground. I was behind her. I rode up and tried to grab the reins of the mare. But she shied again, this time falling to the ground right on top of the doctor’s wife. I dismounted and grabbed the reins of the mare. I stood the mare up and tried to help the woman. Yet I held two horses who obviously were spooked, expecting something else frightening to happen at any moment.
The doctor dismounted and took care of his wife, diagnosing her with a possible broken ankle. We lifted her back up on one of our other horses and she and her husband rode double, me leading the mare, back to the ranch.
My boss, the owner of the ranch, apologized and sent the couple to the hospital in Riverton, Wyoming; all expenses were paid by the ranch. However, since no one could figure out what the hissing air might be, the mare sadly also was sent to Riverton where her fleshy body ultimately became the basic elements of permanent glue at our nearest glue factory. And sadly, the colt from that time on was on his own.
This is the end of this particular UFO episode. However, it’s interesting to note that I also saw, at least momentarily, the short manifestation of a disc-shaped craft before the mare and the doctor’s wife fell to the ground.
It also is interesting to note that the mare seemed to see or be aware of the small craft manifestations well before others and I could see or hear the hissing distorted atmosphere appear. It seemed, to her eventual detriment, she had an inborn mysterious unusual extra sensory perception. She was keenly aware of the manifestations and perceived them to be unnatural well before any humans or the other horses.
(The drawing above represents a time when my sisters and friends were riding horses at Chadron State Park in Nebraska, one Summer in the mid 1950s. All horses began to shy and buck and all riders saw at least some of the crafts or the object that was manifesting. The voice spoke to us, encouraging me to enter the object. I dismounted and suffered another excruciating conditioning session where strange forces penetrated my body and mind. When I was allowed to exit, I remounted my horse. But the father who was with us canceled the rest of our ride…and we never talked about it except once after our ride.
Other horses also were spooked at different times throughout my life.)
